We attended the non-meeting this evening and some questions arose which I think bear repeating. We have a small bet going on whether or not this comment will appear and if it will appear unedited on this website. Should be fun. It is stated on this website that this project has been in the works for 1 -2 years, why did I hear about it only when the city sent me a ballot? According to the city, the homeowner pays for the sidewalk. Seems to me it is cheaper for those who are not getting a sidewalk rather than a total overall savings. I would like to see the actual numbers on this - sidewalk as proposed vs everyone getting a sidewalk. I noticed the 1000 blocks are not getting sidewalks. I know one is needed over on 44th NE around the blind curve. Drivers treat it as if it were the slingshot to go around the sun. We have ended up in the mud and worse several times. When is the next meeting scheduled? Why is Walnut not being considered? It is a very busy street with numerous people walking there. Once the sidewalk is built, who is liable for upkeep and slip and fall accidents? It is the homeowner.

Too bad the meeting was cancelled. I dropped by the Masonic Home this evening to see if anyone showed up. It probably would have been the largest attendance on record. A lot of angry people dropping off their ballots and wanting answers from our "Leaders". I hope if the meeting is rescheduled, everyone will be notified in time to attend.

I too am concerned with the meeting being called off at the last minute. Particularly since the date of the meeting and the deadline are on the same day, many were going to return their ballots in at this meeting. Those not on the email list will show up for the meeting expecting to be able to cast their ballots, their votes and opinions will not be heard. According to the City ballots can be dropped off at the "Ballot Drop Box" at the City of St. Petersburg Traffic Engineering Complex located at 1744 Ninth Ave N.. Whether your vote is yes or no you should drop off your ballot. Will there be anyone from the NEPNA at The Masonic Home tonight to let those of us that weren't on the email list know that there is no meeting? As I stated whether your vote is yes or no your opinion should be heard. Perhaps I'll go to at least give neighbors the chance to bring their ballots to the "Drop Box"....if it's not too late.

I am not comfortable with the July 12th meeting being cancelled on such short notice. We were told that ballots could be turned in prior to the meeting. If email's were not read on Thursday or the latest Friday then there was not enough time to mail the ballots to the City to be counted. There are those of us who's property will be affected and we want to discuss the funding of the sidewalks. And if anyone is wondering, no I did not distribute the recent flier, I just have concerns regarding the financial impact this will have on the homeowners if funding is not secured.

One point I'd like to discuss is the discrepancies between what is stated on the Parkie Blog and the flier regarding the amount of space the sidewalks will take. The blog says that "The sidewalks will be no more than four feet wide within the city-owned easement in front of the homes where sidewalks are planned." The Flier states "The sidewalks will take up 10 feet of your yard from the curb." I contacted Michael Frederick from the City of St. Pete and when asked this is his response. "Normally, "standard" City sidewalks that go in on local roadways these days are 5' wide and 5' from the edge of curb. That would normally place them 1' off the property line. There is always room for local adjustments to make allowances for landscaping and elevation changes. This would be determined by the design engineer at the time of the project. Typically, a retro-fit sidewalk would stop at a driveway, but parked vehicles are required by law to keep the way clear. To me that sounds like 10 feet from the inside boundry of the sidewalk to the curb.

I agree with most of the above. I do not like walking my dogs while sharing the streets with cars. Not as nimble as I used to be. We need to find a way to pay for it because I do not have the extra money on a fixed income. Glad to hear that there will be another vote if we do have to pay. I am willing to approve the plan to see if it can be funded without fees to us.

I am appreciative of NEPNA's (particularly Darren Bishop) concern for the safety of its neighbors and thoughtful plan to increase it. I have relatives who live in Old Northeast and when visiting them we occassionally go for a walk through the neighborhood on the sidewalks. Many times we've encountered others out for a stroll, sitting on their porch, or doing yard work. It is always so pleasant to exchange greetings, recognize people that don't live next door, and see others enjoying their community.

While there are certain aspects of the plan that I am not thrilled with, (I imagine it is difficult to please every single house in a neighborhood the size of ours) I have chosen to look at the broader picture, and support the ultimate goal of the plan (increased pedestrian safety). The short-term inconvenience of construction is certainly worth the long-term convenience of being able to move easily within the neighborhood. I certainly don't want to pay out of my pocket for the full amount of the sidewalks, but knowing that there will be another vote if it comes to that further reinforces my decision to vote yes for the Traffic Circulation Plan.

I’ve been following the development of the sidewalks over the past few months. I wanted a sidewalk on my street because it would enhance my property value, but it is on the next street over. At least we may get a crosswalk to cross 40th.

The fliers were a disappointment. It seems cowardly to not associate a name with the flier or to provide even contact information. I hope people do not believe what those fliers say.

Neighbors,

I've spent some time examining the details of the Traffic Circulation Plan as the proposed plan will have a direct impact on my property. I am in full support of this plan. I'm sure that many feel the plan is deficient is some way-or form, and I, for one, am not looking forward to the construction activity. But, I'm convinced this plan will greatly enhance the livability of our neighborhood.

As noted in Darren's eMail. let's keep the spurious rumors at bay.
